Just about everybody with an email account knows what a pain in the backside spam can be when it sidles past the filters and splats in your inbox. For those of us with our own domains though it can cause problems far beyond wasting the time it takes to delete.
There are of course some defensive measures you can take to both avoid having your domain forged in the From address of spam and to make sure more of your own, legitimate, email does not get caught up in filters as spam. While I haven’t gone as far as this yet I have implemented SPF records on my domains. Now though, I’m wondering whether doing so has made me a target! Read more

Running a website, it is easy to get lost in the day to day running of content creation, the various checks and testing that need doing periodically, creating blog posts(!) etc and forget sometimes about the bigger picture and how we can have an effect, however small, for good or <melodrama>evil</melodrama> within that bigger picture.
This blog entry has been prompted by just (within the last hour) inadvertently coming so close ( / \ this close) to doing a little bit of evil in terms of the usefulness of the web. Read more
Website To Dos To Dos Being Done

Website To Dos is being gradually completely rewritten.
When the site was originally put up it had no capability for splitting items across pages. The comprehensibility and coverage of the explanations clearly suffered in some cases from the attempt to jam them into a single reasonably sized page.
Well, the site now can split to dos across multiple pages. The various canonical redirects were the first entries to be rewritten due to the lack of concrete examples on the original pages. They have now been grouped together in a single multi-page entry that is much clearer than before. There are also now examples for Apache and PHP with more to come as I get the time after the rewrite.
Decide upon your goals and audience, Focus pages, & Tend outbound links have all now been updated with the latter two entries absorbing “Avoid identical meta-tags” and “Avoid bad neighbourhoods”.
All updates will be announced on the blog.

I’m afraid I’m going to launch the site with a rant, hopefully not an incomprehensible one, on the way one sector appears to trying the most shameless appropriation of a term since IBM called their particular brand of personal computer a “PC”.
This particular bit of linguistic light-fingeredness is the way certain segments of the graphical design community (by no means all) equate the term “web design” with “graphic design on the web”. Shown at its most hardcore in site reviews all over the web that go no further than “You need a good logo” as if that was the Philospher’s Stone of web design.
